As if Metztli himself, had felt a bit squirrelly,
during the early spring morning.
We awoke to news of an explosion of an oil rig,
in our beloved Sea of Mexico.
A hundred plus survivors and, eleven dead,
forever entombed in the muck debasing the Gulf floor.
We worry, those who adore the Earth, about the motives
of modern progress.
A catastrophe like so reminds us of our foolish endeavor,
not to mention our apathy for the consequences of said excursions.
Deep sea oil drilling...
The opening of nature reserves for drilling...
The eviction of the indigenous person, from their
ancient lands, for oil drilling rights, for natural resource extraction,
for progress.
Thick black crude, oozing its way through currents, tides, gyres,
splattering our beloved shores with vile pollution. Petrol,
as dark as the primordial abyss.
So mourn for the young sea life, cheated out of an opportunity
at a full life in pristine ocean waters.
Society needs its oil.
